Artist Statement
Art, for me, is a relief and a release. As a newcomer to the visual art world, leaving my nine-to-five to become a full-time artist was one of the best decisions I’ve made thus far. My work is a reflection of my constant growth, and it changes accordingly. While the majority of my inspiration comes music, my love of animals and the natural beauty of our surroundings heavily influence my art as well. The pieces included in “Healing Through The Pain” primarily focus on leading problems plaguing the Black community in America: lack of identity, envy, and the systematic slaughtering young Black males.
Artist Biography
Roger Anthony received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Howard University in 2010. While in undergrad, his love of tattoos drove him to start creating his own designs, and shortly after he began tattooing. A few months after graduation he met Chris Mensah, owner and master artist at Pinz-N-Needlez Tattoo, and began working part-time in the shop until he was awarded an apprenticeship in 2011. While working part-time, Roger attended Montgomery College, the Washington Studio School, and the Art League School, taking courses that improved his skills in drawing, tattooing, and painting. Roger is currently a full-time apprentice/artist at Pinz-N-Needlez Tattoo, and plans to begin traveling to other shops for guest spots in the near future.
